Non-destructive testing (NDT) solutions are important to industries including the space sector. As the ESA Technology Broker UK, one of the technologies we have been presented with for potential applications in the space industry is a new NDT technology that is capable of finding flaws that other NDT methods (including XCT) cannot detect.
Created by a UK-based SME, this technology can provide early-stage detection of precursors to critical failure, such as crack-like features, where the separation between flaw faces can be just 1-10um.
The technology excites and detects nonlinear behaviour of crack-like flaws including delamination, kissing bonds, and a lack of fusion in additively manufactured parts. This is done through the use of sound and ultrasound, which are unaffected by surface roughness.
Ideal for testing critical structures and with no health and safety issues to worry about, this testing solution offers rapid test times of under one minute for parts up to 200 x 200 x 200mm in size.
