Among the innovative technologies we have been presented with as part of the work as ESA Technology Broker UK is a conductive ceramic capable of rapid heating.
Developed by Almath Crucibles Ltd, the conductive ceramic is a low-carbon-loaded alumina composite that can be fabricated into various shapes, including bars, crucibles, rods and tubes. Produced via a slip casting process, the material is highly efficient for rapid heating with minimal energy input, which makes it ideal for microwave heating applications. The ceramic can also be heated with electrical connections, with a ceramic reaching 800°C within just 30 seconds using a microwave in an air environment.
The use of direct microwave or electrical heating minimises heat loss, creating a more efficient heating process with less energy consumption, making the material suitable for applications such as containers to hold and heat special specimens.
The conductive ceramic demonstrates superior shock resistance in comparison to traditional insulating ceramics, which allows for rapid heating and cooling, and makes it suitable for extreme and specialised applications.
