How ESA Technology Brokerage Works

Wed, 26 March, 2025

As the ESA Technology Broker for the UK, we work to bridge the gap between space and terrestrial markets. This is achieved by focusing on two main objectives; to identify and apply technologies developed for space to terrestrial use, and to bring terrestrial innovations to the space sector.

These innovations can span different industries and specialities, ranging from AI and robotics down to quantum technologies.

This requires an understanding of industry needs (‘market pull’) and the available technologies (‘technology push’) that could find uses elsewhere.

In order to help facilitate this cross-over between industries, ESA Technology Brokers provide tailored support to assist with the creation of new products and services. This support includes:

  • Business support and coaching
  • Technical feasibility and market analysis
  • Technology scouting
  • Brokering introductions to potential collaborators and clients
  • Guidance and support on funding opportunities

In addition to this support, we also implement calls as part of the ‘Prepare for Space’ initiative, which is designed to support organisations in creating strong proposals and business cases, speeding up the contracting process, and enhancing commercial viability, technical strength, and programme coherence.

We have already begun to collate a range of different innovative UK technologies with the potential for spin-in to the space sector and spin-out to other industries, including novel materials, software programs, services and technologies.
